Hi there! I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve created a tentative schema for the HIRED database. I faced a number of challenges when constructing this web of tables. How do we treat students who are jointly advised by two professors? What about professors with appointments in multiple departments or who have been poached? How can we account for similar departments with different names at each institution? I expect that the format of the database will change, but hopefully this is a good enough starting point for now. Highly Informative Repository of Employment Data for PhDs, or HIRED-PhD, is a database created with the goal of helping current (or soon-to-be) graduate students make choices about selecting an institution or research group that will further their career goals.
